Journalists in Niger state have condemned in strong term the attack and arrest of Channel Television Correspondent Mr Emperor Simon and Camera Man Alhaji Abdul Egba respectively in Tafa local government area of the state by security operatives.
The Journalist through their body, the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) considers this an abberration to our struggling democracy and a minus to the state known for almost zero cases of violent attack and despotic arrest of Journalists.
“We view this as a deliberate attempt by Police to suppress Journalists from carrying out their constitutional duty of objective and factual reportage of events especially the one like that of Tafa local government that political issues are involved.
” If police in Tafa can crudely attack and arrest Journalists as they did to the channel television reporter and Camera Man , it implies that they need training on how to imbibe the culture of democracy and relate well with the public, instead of giving room for suspecting their activities as hatchet jobs for political manipulations .
” We are therefore not happy with the uncivilized attack and arrest of our two members , it is unacceptable , we condemn it and consider the action of the police in Tafa against Mr Emperor and Alhaji Abdul as a threat to core values and practices of democracy. that allow for free press.
“Consequently we demand unreserved apology from the police authority and reprimand the police men involved in the harrasment of the two journalists, lest our members boycott police activities.
“We are solidly behind our members; Mr Emperor and Alhaji Abdul, to continue to discharge their duties in threat free atmosphere, for the interest of development of Niger state and to strengthen the core values of democracy. We enjoin them to remain resolute in line with code of ethics of the profession. We use pen , we don’t use Gun!”
