Registrar of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Dr Kayode Akindele Ogunleye weekend revealed that the University is still the best state University in Nigeria.
Dr Ogunleye, who was the immediate past Registrar of BOWEN University, Iwo, made the disclosure in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo
According to him, this fact is based on the assessment of the ranking webometric of universities in the world, which ranked the University as the best state University in Nigeria in the years 2018 and 2019 and the fourteenth and the seventh best in the country respectively.
He said the ranking had further proved that that academic excellence of LAUTECH remains intact despite its recent challenges occasioned by a bout of strike action in the University.
He however decried what he described as the unfortunate hype of the crises, saying the effects of the strike was never as bad as were being painted.
‘When I was initially appointed as LAUTECH Registrar and I went to the meeting of the Registrars of Nigerian Universities,my colleagues were looking at me and within them they were saying hope you know what you are doing. The University that is engulfed in crisis. But I made them to know that there are more of negative news about the University than positive and that their insinuation was wrong.
‘Even I was surprised too when I came in. What I met on ground was a huge surprise. You know I have said some of the positive things that I saw in the University that I never expected. But we allow the negative to override the positive’, he said.
He added that he could remember that he did not want to apply as Registrar when he saw the advertisement becsuse, he himself was equally affected by the negative news about the institution, but eventually put in his application due to the words of encouragement he received from the Vice-Chancellor of BOWEN University Professor Joshua Ogunwole.
‘I did not want to apply because the negative news affected everybody and I said I would not apply. However, when I told the current VC of Bowen, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, he said Kayode you must go. Go and do the interview. You know when it comes to Technology, we respect that University. A lot of us know that University has potential. You must go. You have something to do there’.
The Registrar, who had his Ph.D in Carrabian and African Literature said ‘My advice is that people should come and see things themselves. When they come around and see the atmosphere, the structures, the facilities, the campus and a lot of things going on in the University, they will be greatly impressed and encouraged’.
The Ogbomoso-born Registrar revealed that recently, some greatly influential people in the country that he least expected could offer to send their children to LAUTECH had called him saying they wanted to bring their children to the University, requesting him to assist them to get admission for the children.
According to the Registrar, in terms of academic calendar, the University is well ahead of majority of the renowned universities in the country.
He noted that the dream of the University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Olufisayo Ologunde, was to transform it to a standard obtainable anywhere in the world.
